The Prytaneion is the building that functioned as the official residence and working hub of the city’s highest magistrates—the executive leadership of the polis. It housed the prytaneis, who led the government, oversaw state ceremonies, and managed public affairs. It also housed the sacred city hearth and was where official banquets and the reception of distinguished guests took place. In this sense it serves as the Greek equivalent of a senate house for chief dignitaries, distinguishing it from a market hall, a dedicated city council chamber, or an athletic stadium.
